We have all heard the expression New Year, New You! I no longer subscribe to that mantra or that way of thinking. As a woman over 50 who has seen the patterns of myself and many others of making BIG promises on New Year’s Day that are long forgotten within 10 days or so, I realize how silly it is.
Why do we need a certain day to mark the beginning of much-needed change? Every day we wake up is a gift. We have the ability to make decisions that will affect the rest of our lives regardless of what the calendar says!
If we change our way of thinking and instead adopt a new mantra of every day, I choose to be at least 1% better than yesterday. We would, in fact, have a 365% improvement in life without feeling the least bit stressed over it or deprived. A few years ago, my daughter made me a beautiful gratitude jar. A simple pale blue glass mason jar that she painted the words Gratitude Jar and added a dragonfly, which she knows has meaning to me. It is still, to this day, my favorite gift from her. What she taught me was how to celebrate all that I am grateful for throughout each year by dumping out the contents of little scraps of paper with just a few simple words on them added each day.
My new New Year’s Day tradition is to empty my gratitude jar and revisit all of the amazing little blessings I experienced throughout the year that have long been forgotten. So rather than complain about the 30 lbs I neglected to lose AGAIN, I focus on the positives and the wins. It has changed everything for me. I no longer dread New Year’s Eve if I don’t have some fancy plans or a crazy fun night out. This year I went to dinner with family and watched a movie with my husband and children, and we were all asleep by 11:00 PM.
Of course, I am once again disappointed that I did not honor my commitment to losing weight yet again. However, I have had so many wins in other areas of my life to focus on and be proud of. So this year, I am taking a completely different approach. One that I have never tried before and have a good feeling will finally get me to my healthy and happy weight. I have done all of the popular diet trends and have lost and gained back weight so many times it is ridiculous.
I have hired a weight loss coach. Her name is Corrine, and she lost 100 lbs and has kept it off for over 13 years. Her approach is completely different than any diet or weight loss program I have done. I believe in the power of coaching. When I wanted to grow my salon business, I hired a business coach and doubled my numbers within a year. When I decided to launch an online business, I hired a course creation coach. I got stuck halfway through the process and searched for and hired a course completion coach.
I was unhappy in life and in business and hired a life coach who completely changed my mindset for the better. I am putting my faith in having a weight loss coach and making this the year to get to that goal of a healthier body and lifestyle. I want to be around to see my children get married and hopefully give me some grandchildren.
So CHEERS to trusting the coaching process and having a plan and not depriving myself with crazy fad diets that once I stop, I gain all of the weight back plus some! I will be sharing my journey in my blog, podcast, and coffee chats, as I know, I am not alone in wanting to live a healthier lifestyle. I hope my journey motivates other people to simply commit to making each day 1% better. Happy New Year! Celebrate with Gratitude
